About
North Cornwall Academy is located in Bodmin. We work closely with all of the secondary and primary schools within our partnership to ensure the needs of those most vulnerable pupils are met. Our curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of our pupils and staff work extremely hard to ensure pupils are given every opportunity to succeed and aspire. We work closely with a diverse range of outside agencies both statutory and voluntary so that our young people can access the support and guidance they need. The staff are very hardworking and creative and always go the extra mile with the young people on roll.

Our Curriculum at NCAPA
Our curriculum is designed to reengage learners with their education, to identify gaps in knowledge and address these gaps through thoughtful delivery. It’s unashamedly academic as we are aware of the link between sound knowledge and successful next steps. Key to its success are the positive relationships that are built between staff and students. There is also a strong vocational aspect to our curriculum that can include experience of work e.g. individual work placements, or as part of a group of students at offsite venues such as Dartmoor Zoo, the Air Museum or Screech Owl Sanctuary.
We also aim to provide our students with positive experiences to support their development socially, underpinned by our Trust values, and to enable access to enrichment opportunities they may never otherwise experience. Our location gives us access to many places of outstanding natural beauty.
Of course, as a Trauma Informed Academy, we have high expectations, and know that qualifications open doors. However, we recognise that, for a period of time, a young person may not be able to be challenged academically as much as we’d like, and this is where our curricular flexibility and a Trauma Informed Approach comes into play. You can read more about this here: Trauma and its potential impact
Finally, we work hard to provide students with Awe and Wonder opportunities. Historically, we have visited Wimbledon, taken students to Auschwitz and enabled students to access a skiing trip.

Primary at NCAPA
At North Cornwall Academy, we currently run three Primary classes;
- Key Stage one
- Lower Key stage two
- Upper Key stage two.
Each class is run by a committed, experienced teacher, who has responsibility for specific subject areas. Each teacher is ably supported by two teaching assistants.
We aim to provide and equip our children with a breadth of skills to progress socially, academically, and creatively, whilst also encouraging and providing a nurturing and positive environment where the children can feel safe and secure enough to thrive.
Our curriculum is designed to incorporate academic lessons, enriching activities and nurture, in order to reengage students with their learning and enable them to catch up with their peers. We currently follow the National Curriculum in all subjects in both lower and upper key stage 2, and use schemes such as The Hamilton Trust and White Rose Maths to support effective planning and delivery. Alongside this, we also understand how important each and every child’s social and emotional wellbeing is. Interventions such the Zones of Regulation and Growth Mind-set for emotional regulation, with British Values intertwined as a basis for moral and cultural exploration, allow us to support our pupils to become responsible members of our global society whilst also supporting them to move on to the next academic chapter with confidence and self-belief.
Encouraging love of, and confidence in reading, is at the heart of all lessons. At North Cornwall Academy, we strive to teach children to read effectively, Through use of the synthetic phonics programme, Read Write Inc. (RWI) we are able to support the children to learn the 44 common sounds, sight vocabulary, decoding and encoding words as well as spelling and accurate letter formation. As part of our approach, children who require extra targeted support will receive ‘fast track tutoring’, which is delivered by a RWI trained member of staff on a 1:1 basis. Additionally, if needed, in upper KS2 we use also use ‘Fresh Start’ which provides support and interventions in line with the RWI approach at an age appropriate level.
Opportunities to read discretely and directly throughout the day and using specific praise for our readers, is cultivating an environment of capable and enthusiastic readers. In Upper Key Stage 2,for those pupils who are not following our synthetics phonics program, we currently follow the National curriculum for English, where we encompass a holistic key text based approach interwoven with spelling, grammar, and punctuation teaching and learning.
Our overarching approach, whilst also encompassing the trust’s values, is to embrace an understanding of each individual student’s specific needs, with all staff being trained in emotional coaching and Trauma Informed Schools (TIS) approach, which allows us to effectively deliver a targeted education within a whole class setting. We recognise and respond to the rights of our pupils and our use of play, curiosity, empathy and reflection allows us to facilitate the growth and personal development of our primary pupils to support them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life at the academy.
Key Stage 3
We run a 'rolling programme' where pupils are taught in mixed year group classes at Key Stage 3 due to small class numbers, and who may remain with Alternative Provision for longer than a Year. (Though we remain short stay). Our spiral design ensures each pupils receives teaching of the knowledge, understanding and skills within this planning they need from their various starting points. It is flexible and dynamic enough to be able to respond to need in this way- in Maths and Science, for example,-but draws from the National Curriculum.
In Key Stage 3, here is a sample of a typical academic taught curriculum our students receive - see PDF below. You can see many of the sorts of learning activities students at NCAPA are able to engage in in our Twitter pages on our website. For more information about the curriculum, please contact us.

Child Protection & Safeguarding Policy
North Cornwall Academy recognises that the safety and welfare of children is paramount and that we have a responsibility to protect children in all of our academy activities. We take all reasonable steps to ensure, through appropriate procedures and training, that all children, irrespective of sex, age, disability, race, religion or belief, sexual identity or social status, are protected from abuse.
We endeavour to provide a safe and welcoming environment where children are respected and valued. We are alert to the signs of abuse and neglect and follow procedures to ensure that children and young people receive effective support, protection and justice.
We listen to our pupils and take seriously whet they tell us, children are aware of the adults they can talk to if they have a concern. When there are concerns for a child's welfare, we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies. We will ensure concerns are discussed with parents/.carers first unless we have reason to believe that by doing so would be contrary to the child's welfare.
Our Child Protection and Safeguarding policy underpins and guides our safeguarding procedures and protocols.
