About
Caradon Academy provides education for mainstream pupils who have been permanently excluded or are at risk of permanent exclusion or on an intervention basis. Caradon Academy is based in Liskeard, South East Cornwall; a region that includes some of the most socially and economically deprived rural areas within the county of Cornwall. The academy is a mainstream provision for pupils designated as disengaged. It is most effective when used as an early intervention strategy to re-engage pupils with their learning. Caradon Academy can take up to 40 pupils and is a mixed sex academy for pupils who have been permanently excluded or are on intervention programmes between Key Stage 1 – Key Stage 4. Caradon Academy is inspected as a mainstream provision and as such have to meet Ofsted criteria with regard to attendance, behaviour, attainment and pupil progress. In the last Ofsted inspection (2018) Caradon Academy was rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted outcome.
We work closely with all of the secondary and primary schools within our partnership to ensure the needs of those most vulnerable pupils are met. Our curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of our pupils and staff work extremely hard to ensure pupils are given every opportunity to succeed and aspire. We work closely with a diverse range of outside agencies both statutory and voluntary so that our young people can access the support and guidance they need. At Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 pupils follow a personalised learning programme linked to the national curriculum, whilst at Key Stage 4 pupils will follow a personalised learning programme which is linked to both academic qualifications and/or a vocational route, which can include work experience. The pathway followed by the pupil will be dependent on their educational needs and may include elements of on-line learning.
Pupils access the academy either through permanent exclusion or as a result of being referred to the pupil placement panel or medical pupil referral panel. This panel, made up of local schools, acts as the placement panel for pupils into and out of the academy. It is expected that a pupil in KS2 will access the academy for a maximum of 4 terms, whilst at KS3 a pupil will access the academy for up to a maximum of 3 terms. It is acknowledged that pupils in KS4 may spend the whole of that key stage in an academy.

Primary
The Primary team at Caradon Academy, are an experienced team of six, who provide and equip our children with a breadth of skills to progress socially, emotionally, academically, and creatively, whilst also encouraging and providing a nurturing and positive environment where the children can feel safe and secure enough to thrive.
Our curriculum is designed to incorporate academic lessons, weekly outdoor learning, and enriching experiences, to nurture and ignite a love of learning. We currently follow the National Curriculum in all subjects in both lower and upper key stage 2, and use schemes such as The Hamilton Trust and White Rose Maths to support effective planning and delivery. We follow half termly themes in History, Geography and Science, which are strongly supported by our reading spine to develop curiosity around the topic and a love of reading. Alongside this, we also understand how important each and every child’s social and emotional development is. We deliver programmes and approaches, such as Zones of Regulation and Growth Mindset, outdoor learning and animal care to foster to develop character and self-confidence. British Values is intertwined across the curriculum, as a basis for moral and cultural exploration. This allows us to support our pupils to become responsible members of our global society, whilst also supporting them to move on to the next academic chapter, with confidence and self-belief.
At Caradon Academy, encouraging a love of, and confidence in reading, is at the heart of all lessons. We strive to teach children to read effectively and through using the synthetic phonics programme, Read Write Inc. (RWI), we are able to support the children to learn the 44 common sounds, sight vocabulary, decoding and encoding words, as well as spelling and accurate letter formation. As part of our approach, children who require ‘targeted’ support, will receive ‘fast track tutoring’, which is delivered by a RWI trained member of staff on a 1:1 basis. Additionally, if needed, in upper KS2 we use also use ‘Fresh Start’, which provides support and interventions in line with the RWI approach at an age appropriate level.
Opportunities to read discretely and directly throughout the day, and using specific praise for our readers, is cultivating an environment of capable and enthusiastic readers. In Upper Key Stage 2 -for those pupils who are not following our synthetics phonics program- we currently follow the National Curriculum for English, where we encompass a holistic key text based approach interwoven with spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
We recognise and respond to the rights of our pupils and our use of play, curiosity, empathy and reflection allows us to facilitate the growth and personal development of our primary pupils to support them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain by making a positive contribution to society.
You can find out about our broad and varied Primary curriculum taught subjects within our subject pages.
Key Stage 3
We run a 'rolling programme' where pupils are taught in mixed year group classes at Key Stage 3 due to small class numbers, and who may remain with Alternative Provision for longer than a Year. (Though we remain short stay). Our spiral design ensures each pupils receives teaching of the knowledge, understanding and skills within this planning they need from their various starting points. It is flexible and dynamic enough to be able to respond to need in this way- in Maths and Science, for example,-but draws from the National Curriculum. For example, see our Curriculum blog about Science at KS3.
In Key Stage 3, here is a sample of a typical academic taught curriculum our students may receive, whilst we remain innovative and able to adapt to cohort need. - see PDF below. For more information, please contact us.

Child Protection & Safeguarding Policy
Caradon Academy recognises that the safety and welfare of children is paramount and that we have a responsibility to protect children in all of our academy activities. We take all reasonable steps to ensure, through appropriate procedures and training, that all children, irrespective of sex, age, disability, race, religion or belief, sexual identity or social status, are protected from abuse.
We endeavour to provide a safe and welcoming environment where children are respected and valued. We are alert to the signs of abuse and neglect and follow procedures to ensure that children and young people receive effective support, protection and justice.
We listen to our pupils and take seriously whet they tell us, children are aware of the adults they can talk to if they have a concern. When there are concerns for a child's welfare, we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies. We will ensure concerns are discussed with parents/.carers first unless we have reason to believe that by doing so would be contrary to the child's welfare.
Our Child Protection and Safeguarding policy underpins and guides our safeguarding procedures and protocols.
