‘Peculiar Pets’ poems by Wave pupils published in new national poetry book

Poems written by four primary aged pupils from Wave’s Penwith Academy have been published in a new book after impressing judges in the national Young Writers ‘Peculiar Pets’ poetry competition.

Enthusiastic young readers from Glendinning Academy will soon have hundreds more books to choose from in the academy’s library - thanks to a £6,000 grant from the Foyle Foundation.

Take talented young writers from nine Wave academies across Cornwall and Devon.  Give each academy a picture to spark their imagination and ask them to write a section of a story and then pass it on to the next academy.  The result – three incredible ‘Chain Stories’ which are funny, exciting, chilling and, above all, BRILLIANT to read.

Pupils and staff at Glendinning Academy, Wave’s special free school for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Devon, are incredibly happy to have moved into their brand new building in Newton Abbot. They are now busy making plans to invite members of the local community to join them for an exciting celebration event and see their new building and facilities during the summer term if Covid restrictions allow.

Two of the country’s leading street artists have been communicating with staff and pupils from Nine Maidens Academy in Cornwall after hearing their work had inspired the pupils’ GCSE coursework.

Pupils at Wave’s Torlands Academy have been swapping lessons in traditional classrooms for the chance to learn outdoors – thanks to the development of a new Forest School.

At Wave, we are committed to progressing the social, emotional and academic outcomes for all of our students to enable them to achieve their true potential.

In line with our company vision to 'significantly change student lives for the better', the Wave Trust has introduced an "Awe and Wonder" scheme for our students. This is a fund that is dedicated to provide our students with access to activities and events that they may not normally have the opportunity to experience.
