We will be a trauma informed school, use the family school approach developed by the Anna Freud Centre and be communication friendly.
Appropriate qualifications will be available at Key Stage 4 including GSCEs and vocational options.
At both primary and secondary phase there will be lots of outdoor learning opportunities and experience based learning to promote engagement and social and emotional skills. We will work closely with our families and the community in order to provide opportunities for our pupils to develop communication skills, a positive sense of self, self-esteem and learn about activities that promote good mental health. Enrichment will be a crucial part of our school; working with animals, horticulture and cultural opportunities will be embraced. Pupils will take part in off-site visits which will enrich and engage, including accessing adventurous sports such as surfing, sailing, climbing etc. There will be opportunities to take part in Ten Tors and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Our curriculum also includes specific therapies and interventions that each pupil needs. Pupils will be supported by the schools high staff to pupil ratios, our staff’s specialist knowledge and training, an Autism and communication friendly school, thematic curriculum approach at primary and Key Stage 3, engagement activities including those that promote active movement such as accessing gym equipment, play therapy and emotional logic and specialist facilities including sensory rooms.
Our academy will be purpose designed and built with the needs of our pupils at the centre of the design. Our building will support the age range of pupils with appropriate separation and areas of the school to encourage pupil access to play places where they can self-regulate. For more information on our building design and public consultation related to planning visit Development | Martock-Ash Academy | England (martockashacademy.co.uk) Hill View Academy was previously known as Martock-Ash Academy, the name was changed to better reflect the local surroundings.
Wave Multi Academy Trust are proud to be able to work with Somerset County Council and look forward to working with local schools, community groups and families in order to develop our new provision that meets the children and young people’s need in the area and plays an active part in the community. We will aim to be a great benefit to the local community, both with the work we do and the employment opportunities that will be available.
Our Curriculum at Hill View
Curriculum Overview
Our individualised curriculum will be designed to enable pupils to develop a sense of personal responsibility towards learning in collaboration with their teachers and support staff. Progress will be monitored carefully and targets will be designed to challenge and provide opportunity for progression.
Primary
Our pupils will access the International Primary Curriculum with the addition of maths, English, horticulture and animal husbandry. There will also be a lot of opportunity to learn outside the classroom in natural environments and through play particularly to help develop their social skills. We will use regular assessments to track and monitor individual and cohort progress. The pupils will have regular access to social and emotion based interventions as well as SaLT interventions and Sensory opportunities as needed. We plan to work closely with the pupil's families through our family support workers to ensure that we are supporting the whole child.
Reading will be taught through the Read Write Inc Systematic Synthetic Phonics validated programme

In KS3 pupils will have access to The International Middle Years Curriculum; this ensures a cohesive and sequenced approach to their learning and ensures connections between subjects are evident. Targeted pupils will also have access to 1:1 or small group intervention sessions including Emotional Literacy, SaLT and other specific therapies.

School Site & Building
Intelligent design allows the school to be organised by age (separate primary and secondary schools), primary needs (SLCN or SEMH) and stage broadly based on ability rather than discrete years groups. The building is able to flex to accommodate varying cohort sizes throughout each academic year. Considerable design time spent looking at adjacencies to ensure operational needs of the school are met. It also includes a zone which could potentially be let out for community use, outside of school hours (subject to further development by the Trust).
The proposed design has been developed to ensure key connectivity between building, landscape, and surrounding context.
